Function of a Muffler and Exhaust

The exhaust system on your vehicle has many functions, such as reducing noise and safely carrying dangerous exhaust fumes away from the cabin area of your vehicle. It also contains a major emissions system component – the catalytic converter.

The exhaust system starts at the engine, where the exhaust manifolds collect the exhaust from each cylinder. The exhaust is then analysed by the oxygen sensors, cleaned by the catalytic converter, reanalysed by secondary oxygen sensors, and then quieted by the muffler.

Other smaller, but also very important exhaust system components include heat shields, flexible sections in the piping and rubber hangers that help isolate noise and vibration from the chassis, and make things even quieter and more comfortable for the passengers.

A failure in any of these components can be caused by repeated heat and stress, or by environmental issues such as corrosion, or physical contact with objects on the road.
